Position Overview:
The Director of Policy and Social Change will play a pivotal role in driving systemic change by advocating for policies that promote sustainable, affordable housing and fostering a social movement around these values. This position is perfect for someone with experience in policy development, community engagement, and social advocacy who is passionate about housing justice and has the time to dedicate to this transformative mission. While the role begins as a volunteer, it is designed to grow into one of the most influential leadership positions within BIOS Homes.
Key Responsibilities:
Policy Advocacy and Development:
- Collaborate with local governments, planning commissions, and policymakers to shape and advance housing regulations that support renewable energy, modular construction, and sustainability.
- Develop position papers, policy recommendations, and advocacy strategies to influence legislative and regulatory change.
- Stay informed about emerging legislation and trends in housing, sustainability, and zoning to proactively address challenges and opportunities.
Zoning and Regulatory Navigation: Work with stakeholders to modernize zoning codes and permitting processes to enable sustainable housing developments. Partner with urban planners, architects, and legal teams to propose actionable changes in land-use policies.
Social Advocacy and Community Engagement: Build and lead educational campaigns, workshops, and town halls to raise public awareness about the importance of sustainable affordable housing. Engage with grassroots organizations, nonprofits, and advocacy groups to strengthen collective efforts. Develop and execute initiatives to shift public perception of sustainable housing, framing it as a cornerstone of societal progress.
Fostering Public-Private Partnerships: Collaborate with nonprofits, private investors, and government agencies to unlock funding, resources, and expertise. Build alliances with like-minded organizations to amplify the impact of BIOS Homes’ mission.
Building a Social Movement: Leverage traditional and social media platforms to highlight success stories and advocate for change. Mobilize communities and stakeholders to support sustainable housing initiatives through petitions, events, and targeted outreach.
Qualifications:
- Passionate about affordable housing, sustainability, and social justice.
- Experience in policy advocacy, zoning, urban planning, or community engagement.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and advocacy writing.
- Proven ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders, from policymakers to grassroots organizations.
- Self-motivated, with the ability to take initiative and work independently.
- Flexible availability to dedicate spare time, with a commitment to growing into a full-time leadership role.
Preferred Skills and Attributes:
- Experience with lobbying or legislative processes.
- Familiarity with housing and renewable energy policies.
